Yesterday marked a defining chapter in the journey of AquaPark with the pouring of concrete for South Africa’s first Olympic-standard 50m swimming pool. This critical step lays the foundation for what will soon become a world-class aquatic facility built to serve elite athletes, families, schools, and the wider community.
The sight of trucks, mixers, and teams working tirelessly was a powerful reminder that transformation is underway. From dawn until dusk, the dream of a facility that will inspire the next generation of swimmers became tangible reality.
The pour began just after sunrise at 6:00am and continued through to 5:30pm – a full 12-hour effort to ensure the base was completed in a single day, allowing it to set evenly and securely. Concrete was delivered in carefully timed intervals, with two trucks arriving every 30 minutes to keep the flow steady. At its peak, 10 trucks were on the road, transporting the lifeblood of the build to site.
It was a sight to behold: coordination, precision, and teamwork on a massive scale, all focused on laying down the foundation that the entire facility will be built upon.
Every cubic metre of concrete represents progress. It delivers strength and stability as the structural base of a Myrtha-built pool designed to meet international standards. It also symbolises commitment to athletes preparing for LA 2028 Olympics and beyond, while creating community impact by building a safe and inclusive space where families and children can learn water safety and develop swimming skills.
By setting this foundation, AquaPark moves one step closer to creating opportunities for high-performance training, Learn-to-Swim programmes, and international aquatic events.
When complete, AquaPark’s 50-metre Olympic pool will feature cutting-edge Myrtha technology with a movable bulkhead, allowing seamless conversion into a 25-metre pool. This versatility makes it possible to host both short-course and long-course competitions, a first for Pietermaritzburg.
But AquaPark is not only for competitive swimmers. It will also become a hub for:
Learn-to-Swim programmes for children.
As the final trucks completed their deliveries and the last concrete settled into place, the vision of AquaPark moved from plans to permanence. This milestone brings us closer to filling the pool and opening the doors of South Africa’s most advanced aquatic hub.
Phase One is nearing completion, but the journey doesn’t stop here. Each achievement builds towards a facility that will transform lives, unite communities, and celebrate excellence in and out of the water.
Stay connected with AquaPark as we continue to build not only a pool, but a legacy for generations to come.
