Entries have closed. The programme is set. From 7 to 9 August, AquaPark in Pietermaritzburg hosts Swimming South Africa Grand Prix #1, presented by AquaPark’s Local Organising Committee on behalf of KZN Aquatics.
This is a national-tier meet on the SSA calendar, and it is coming to a facility that opened earlier this year.
Grand Prix #1 will be in Short Course format and is open to swimmers aged 12 and over holding Level 3 qualifying times or faster, running as aninter-club competition.
As a short course meet, with all events swum as timed finals, racing will reward a different skill set to long course. Turns matter more. Underwaters matter more. For swimmers starting off the season, it is a test of where your training is at, at the beginning of the season.
Four sessions across three days:
August is a significant month for South African swimming. While Team South Africa’s swimmers and para swimmers recover from racing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a new group of up and coming competitive swimmers are racing in Pietermaritzburg. That is the pathway working as it should. The Grand Prix is just one setting where the next group learns to handle a national field, a call room, a proper meet environment.
AquaPark was built for exactly this. The competition pool is the only Myrtha competition pool in South Africa, sourced from the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka. A separate warm-up pool stays available throughout the competition, so swimmers can prepare properly between races rather than fighting for water.
This one is worth attending in person.
