AquaPark Aquatics Launches

A New Club Environment for Swimming and Water Polo in Pietermaritzburg

A new chapter for aquatics in Pietermaritzburg has begun with the launch of AquaPark Aquatics, the official club environment within AquaPark.

Created to support swimmers and water polo players through structured coaching, clear development pathways and access to a world-class aquatic facility, AquaPark Aquatics has been designed for athletes of different ages and stages of their journey.

From junior swimmers building confidence in the water, to senior athletes refining technique and building fitness, to water polo players developing skill, stamina and team spirit, the club brings a fresh new opportunity to train, grow and compete in a professional environment.

A Club Built Around Development

AquaPark Aquatics has been created to offer more than general access to the pool. While AquaPark public membership gives swimmers access to the facility, AquaPark Aquatics membership includes structured coaching at set times, tailored to the age, level and development stage of each swimmer.

The focus is firmly on creating a stable, enjoyable and professional training environment where athletes can grow steadily and confidently.

Swimming and Water Polo will be core within AquaPark Aquatics, with Junior and Senior Swim Squads opening for sign-up immediately and the Water polo programmes opening for sign up from 1 July.

Coaching Leadership from Theo Verster

As part of his role as CEO of AquaPark, Theo Verster will provide coaching leadership for AquaPark Aquatics. Theo will be on pool deck until a full-time Coach has been appointed. Thereafter he will continue to oversee the coaching programmes.

Theo’s involvement will help ensure that the club is built on a strong coaching structure, a clear development pathway and a trusted presence on the pool deck as the programme grows. His experience across both able-bodied and Para swimming brings valuable insight into athlete development, high-performance training and the importance of creating an inclusive environment where swimmers can thrive.

AquaPark Aquatics will continue building its coaching team as the club develops, with the goal of giving swimmers access to trusted guidance, structured training and a world-class aquatic environment. Theo will run the AquaPark Aquatics squads until a full-time Coach has been appointed, and then he will oversee the coaching and training.

Training in a World-Class Heated Pool

Training will take place in AquaPark’s Olympic-standard 50m Myrtha pool, maintained at a comfortable 27.5°C.

This makes AquaPark an ideal training environment throughout the year, including during winter, when many swimmers and families may otherwise pause their time in the water.

With cutting-edge Myrtha technology and a movable bulkhead, the facility is able to support both long-course and short-course training, making it suitable for a wide range of aquatic disciplines, including swimming and water polo.

AquaPark Aquatics will offer structured Junior and Senior Squad training for swimmers who want coaching, consistency and a clear training routine.

The squads are designed to support swimmers in a stable environment where they can improve technique, build fitness and develop confidence in the water.

For juniors and players who are new to the sport, Learn 2 Polo will run from Friday 7 August to Friday 11 September. This six-week programme is designed to teach the basics, build confidence and introduce players to the energy, teamwork and skill of water polo.

With access to a warm, world-class pool, Water Polo at AquaPark gives players the opportunity to train and play through winter in a professional aquatic environment.

The launch of AquaPark Aquatics forms part of an exciting new phase for AquaPark as it continues to grow into a leading aquatic facility for Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding community.

With structured swimming squads, new water polo programmes, coaching leadership from Theo Verster and access to a warm Olympic-standard pool, AquaPark Aquatics is ready to support the next generation of swimmers and water polo players.

This is a fresh new opportunity for athletes, families and the broader aquatics community to be part of something built around development, excellence and enjoyment in the water.
