A quiet corner of Pietermaritzburg is being transformed — and it’s not just a construction site. It’s the birthplace of something extraordinary.
AquaPark, South Africa’s most ambitious aquatics development, is rapidly taking shape. What was once a blueprint and a bold idea is becoming reality — brick by brick, beam by beam.
The vision for AquaPark has always been bold: to create a world-class aquatic precinct that is inclusive, accessible, and inspirational. More than just a pool, AquaPark is a catalyst — for community transformation, high-performance swimming, and future generations of South Africans who will learn, train, and thrive here.
From the start, this was never going to be an ordinary build. With a 50m Olympic-standard pool using Myrtha Pool’s cutting-edge technology, indoor and outdoor Learn-to-Swim pools, water polo facilities, and para-athlete-ready design, AquaPark is set to be the heartbeat of aquatics in the region.
Construction has been carefully phased, with key milestones driving the project forward. The groundwork has already been laid — and momentum is building.
These milestones are more than just dates — they’re proof that progress is real, and that this vision is being built with precision, passion, and pace.
Behind the scenes, infrastructure is being installed to support not just competition, but education, inclusion, and excellence. From advanced filtration systems to eco-efficient heating, the facility is designed to perform at the highest level while remaining sustainable and accessible.
One of the most exciting features is the movable bulkhead, which allows the 50m pool to be quickly transformed into two 25m pools — perfect for hosting simultaneous events or training sessions. It’s a flexible, future-proof design that adapts to community needs, elite athlete requirements, and everything in between.
AquaPark isn’t just for Olympians — though they’ll certainly train here. It’s for school galas, weekend swimmers, water polo tournaments, para-athletes, Learn-to-Swim programmes, and anyone who wants to be safe in and around water.
And it’s more than just a pool — it’s part of the growing Xhawula Precinct, a transformative vision for Pietermaritzburg that includes education, sport, and wellness. Together, these developments are reshaping the city’s future, offering safe, inspiring spaces for learning, growth, and connection.
The energy is building. The pool is nearly here. The next generation of champions, lifesavers, and community leaders will come from AquaPark.
